Faces & Masques | New Album

William Shaub and Katherine Benson bring the violin and piano music of Robert and Clara Schumann to the fore with their album, Faces & Masques.

Together, Benson and Shaub present Robert Schumann’s sonatas through the “interpretive eyes of Clara,” offering a perspective shaped by the couple’s shared artistic and personal history.

Recorded in Powell Recital Hall at the Martin Center for the Arts at East Tennessee State University, the album embraces a performance style inspired by mid-20th-century recording techniques. Working with noted engineer Dave Schall, the musicians aimed to capture an experience as close to live performance as possible, preserving the natural resonance of the hall and the unedited textures of the instruments.

Faces & Masques is out now on The Paramount Chamber Players label.

Will and Katherine worked with renowned recording engineer Dave Schall to capture the performances during the recording session and preserve the live feel of the music. You’ll hear the natural resonance of the hall — Powell Recital Hall at the ETSU Martin Center for the Arts — as well as the breathing of the musicians and the sound of rosined bow hair on a string.
